Fukuoka-ken
This summer has been hotter than usual. In the summer of 2020, when wearing masks became routine, many people probably spent their time in an air-conditioned room. Even in such a situation, if you have the feeling of “I want to climb the mountain!” or “I want to swim in the sea!”, why not go on a day trip to Nokonoshima Island in Fukuoka?
You may think you need a car for a day trip, but you can easily get to Nokonoshima Island by bus from Hakata Station to Nokonoshima Ferry Pier in Meinohama, which is about a 45-minute bus ride away. Buy a ticket (230 yen for an adult or 120 yen for a child one way) at the pier and take the ferry. Standing on the deck of the ferry, you will feel refreshed by the pleasant headwind and the coolness of the air conditioning.
After 15 minutes, the ferry arrived at Nokonoshima island. The sunlight was strong on that day, so I took the bus to the “Nokonoshima Island Park”. When I got there, I was just in time to see the sunflowers in bloom (late July -August), but I strongly recommend checking the park’s official website for the information on the blooming of seasonal plants before you go.
As I sat down in the shade to take a break, I noticed one horse near me. I could feel how close we were to nature.
After lunch, my friend and I walked around the island. We saw a rainbow in front of the Japanese old-style shop. From a physical point of view, a rainbow is nothing more than a reflection and refraction of light, but psychologically it brings people a little happiness as a symbol of good luck. With that in mind, it was a strange feeling to take the above photo.
We spent the afternoon sitting on the lawn and enjoying a relaxing time playing card games and chatting while looking out at the blue mountains and white clouds. As we were leaving, we saw a sunflower in an empty soda bottle on the path. Some petals had fallen off, but it was still so beautiful.
On the ferry ride home, my camera captured the glow of the setting sun reflected in the ripples on the ocean surface. It was a beauty that can’t be described in a photograph. At sunset, there were more people on the ferry deck looking at the scenery than in the morning. Every person wore a mask, but every person would have been smiling underneath their mask.
