Saga-ken 鳥栖市
Mitsuse-mura on the outskirts of Saga City, located less than an hour from downtown Saga or Fukuoka City, is home to a nostalgic Satoyama landscape nestled between the foothills and farm fields. Surrounded by the abundance of nature every season, it is a place where everyone can find relief surrounded by the calm air.
It was here that Farmer’s Inn Guza opened in 2006. It was around this time when attention was focused on green tourism activities like rural experiences. Appealing to the idea of visiting a relatives’ home in the countryside and finding peace, an old farmhouse was renovated and the guest house officially opened offering 2 rooms a day.
You can experience the good old days of Japan by enjoying a meal cooked on a traditional wood-fired stove or enjoy a dip in a Goemon bath, a barrel-shaped bath heated from below with firewood. People looking to experience life in the great outdoors, or those who simply want to get away from it all and soak in the nature, come here to enjoy a refreshing stay.
This is the basic idea behind self-sufficiency. Every dish is part of a home-cooked meal made by the proprietress using plenty of vegetables from the fields around the inn, allowing you to take part and experience the self-sufficient life.
The dishes will vary depending on the ingredients at hand, but the seasoning is simple and rustic so you can enjoy the pure taste of freshly picked vegetables. Though there is no typical menu, customers come back for more looking forward to what each new dish brings.
On our menu, we offer a stone oven pizza baking experience. The cost, including fees and materials, is 2000 yen per person (1500 yen for elementary school students, 1000 yen for small children). While this is the main activity on offer, there are innumerable experiences waiting for you around the inn. It’s up to you how you want to spend your time – we appreciate people helping us harvest the fields, but you can also go for a walk in the forest, or ask us about what other things you can try out. Some people just enjoy sitting back and doing nothing.
Above all, the charm of this place must be seen to be believed. In the past, many foreign visitors came seeking to experience the traditional way of Japanese life but recently it is more difficult for visitors to come from overseas. Instead, more and more families are visiting to escape the crowds in the city and interact with nature. Children unfamiliar with the outdoors are also having a great time here.
The most important thing of all is to talk and enjoy being with people. Nowadays, it’s especially difficult to make that deep connection with others. We hope you visit and spend some time getting back to yourself and to nature.
Additionally, with the number of unused fields in this area increasing, this is a great opportunity to provide a way for people to interact and take part in activities together that enriches lives and can lead to regional revitalization. After November 2020 we hope to have more specific announcements, so please stay tuned for updates.
