This newsletter brings you information on tourism in Nagasaki. In this issue, we would like to introduce you to some of Nagasaki’s spring flowers that will make you forget about your tired mind due to the new coronavirus infection, and some of the outdoor spots that we recommend during Golden Week.

Spring flowers are in full bloom throughout Nagasaki Prefecture. Please visit Nagasaki to take photos of the beautiful flowers such as cherry blossoms, rape blossoms and azaleas in full bloom.

The cherry blossoms of Omura Park, one of the 100 best places to view cherry blossoms in Japan (Omura City)
Best time to visit: Someiyoshino (late March – early April)
Omura Sakura: early April to mid-April
Omura Park, one of the “100 Best Places for Cherry Blossoms in Japan,” is home to a total of about 2,000 cherry trees that bloom one after another. Among them, the Omura Sakura cherry tree, which is designated as a national natural monument, has 10 sepals compared to 5 for ordinary cherry trees, and at least 60 petals, and as many as 200 petals, making it extremely graceful and elegant.

❶Cherry blossoms in Futo Park (Nagasaki City)
■Best time to visit: Late March – Early April
At Kazato Park, located overlooking Nagasaki Port, you can enjoy the view of cherry blossoms in full bloom against the backdrop of the bronze statue of Sakamoto Ryoma.

❷Cherry blossoms in Sasebo Park (Sasebo City)
■Best time to see: Late March – early April
The park is lined with about 150 cherry trees along the Sasebo River, turning the whole area into spring color. Don’t miss the illuminated cherry blossoms at night in Sasebo Park! It shows a different and fantastic face.

Flower viewing spot (Rape blossoms)
Rape blossoms at Shirakimine Highland
Best time to see: Late March – early April
About 100,000 rape blossoms dye the entire slope yellow and you can enjoy the flowers with the Ariake Sea and Mt Unzen in the background.

Miyama-kirishima in Unzen
Best time to visit: Late April – Late May
Miyama-kirishima is a narrow-leafed small-flowered azalea, also known as “Unzen azalea”, which begins to bloom around late April in the Unzen Jigoku area.

Nakase Meadow Campground
A campground with a panoramic view of the Genkai Sea
The Nakase Grassland Campground is a large grassland with a panoramic view of the Genkai Sea, and on a clear day you can even see the island of Iki. Also, at night, the fishing fires of the fishing boats are fantastic.
It was reopened in April 2020. There are observation sites where you can enjoy camping with a panoramic view of the Genkai Sea, vehicle sites where you can easily camp with your car alongside, and day-camp sites where you can enjoy camping on a day trip, so you can use the site according to your camping style and enjoyment.

A resort in the forest

The fifth issue of “S and N,” a free magazine published jointly by Saga and Nagasaki prefectures, has been completed in order to promote the attractive local area in preparation for the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen West Kyushu Route in 2022.
